All schools in the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB) have an advisory council (also sometimes referred to as "school council" or "parent council", or just "council") to help increase communication between schools and their communities and to serve the needs of students.

School advisory councils may provide advice to the principal and the OCDSB in the following areas:

  • The local school-year calendar
  • The school code of student behaviour
  • Curriculum and program goals and priorities
  • The responses of the school or the OCDSB to achievement in provincial and OCDSB assessment programs
  • Preparation of the school profile
  • Principal profile: Provision of input as to the qualities, skills, attitudes and training/education for the OCDSB and administration to consider in the selection of school principals
  • School budget priorities, including local capital-improvement plans
  • School-community communication strategies
  • Methods of reporting to parents and the community
  • Co-curricular activities in the school
  • School-based services and community partnerships related to social, health, recreational and nutrition programs
  • Community use of school facilities
  • Local co-ordination of services for children and youth
  • Development, implementation and review of Board policies at the local level

The principal assists the school advisory council in carrying out its obligations by:

  • Providing existing non-confidential information*;
  • Allowing the school advisory council to publish information about its activities; and
  • Permitting the school advisory council to raise funds for the benefit of the school and/or the council.

*Note: School advisory councils cannot access information on individual students and staff nor discuss personnel matters and matters that are dealt with under collective agreements. Parents/guardians should speak directly to the teacher or principal to resolve any individual concerns.
